{Inspired Style} Winery Wedding

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Happy Wedding Wednesday to everyone! This week is all about inspired style, (and let me just tell you, next week we have some great things to talk about!) We are going to continue on this Monday with the winery style. Taking the natural colors of the scene, winery weddings have a sense of romance and organic beauty.  PS: I want those burlap bottles SO bad!

{Our Wedding} Finding The Venue

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Holy Moly this has been quite the morning! I haven’t been able to sit down and write a blog post as I have been far too busy BOOKING A VENUE :) I always have a good reason!

Yep, you read it right. Booking, like in real life, like that point of the wedding planning I never thought I would get to. Yep, I’m there! And boy has it been a journey.

Source: 100 Layer Cake

When I first started all of this, I told myself (and all of you) to hold out for the perfect venue with the perfect price, not to settle for something less, and even if it takes forever, don’t give up. Well, I just barely followed my own advice! I was looking for so long at so many places. I almost settled on some amazing and totally over budget venues many times. Each time I knew I wouldn’t be happy feeling ripped off, but that there seemed to be no other solution. The idea of looking on herecomestheguide.com one more time made me want to die. I gave up many times, and came back to it many times. I have created some tips to venue searching in case it helps any of you that are going through hell finding the venue.

Google It: Whenever I find a venue that I like, I search google images to get more photos of the space, inspiration from other weddings held there, and an overall reality on the feel of the space. When I found Vignette Vintage Ranch I did that and found some really great weddings, so I had an idea of how it all went and what the feel of the space was going to be.

Talk It Over: Right before going to see the space, I prepped myself for it. A few of my BM’s and I talked about different ideas I wanted to add to the wedding and how (or if) those would fit in. Turns out that all the various ideas I wanted for my wedding would fit perfectly with this space. I also realized that the runner-up venues, weren’t the right style for the ideas I had. This made me mentally prepared to picture everything in the space when we went to see it.

Prioritize: No venue is going to have every single thing you ever want, especially if you are in a budget. You sort of have to prioritize whats important and what isn’t. I actually didn’t have to do that too much. Because of the price, I was able to keep my whole guest list and the one thing I really wanted, fire pits, I was able to negotiate and get them. Yay for that.

Get Inspired: If you have a vision of your wedding and a style you are going for, it makes it a lot easier to picture yourself and your wedding in that space. Get inspired with ideas for your wedding so you know what you want. Vineyard, Rustic, Barn, etc. This can definitely be rather hard, especially if you are taking items from so many different styles, but once you get the vision together, I swear it will make it so much easier.

Don’t Give Up: I’ll be the first to say it, easier said than done! I totally know! You want to settle and you want to go over budget just to get it over with. But in reality you probably won’t be very happy in the end. Going over budget either means more stress and cutting out people or ideas you really wanted and neither of those are really fun. I literally waited for 8 months of constant searching and feeling like nothing would ever pop up. I felt like I had seen every venue again and again. If you just wait it out, you will find something.

You’ll Be Surprised: When you find the venue, you will definitely be surprised about it all, and it will feel amazing! I talked to the coordinator of our venue and it turns out she does the centerpiece flowers, supplies mason jars, old boxes, milk jars, apothecary jars, antique old linens, etc. SCORE! That is going to save me a lot of money right there! On top of all that, the price is far. See, it somehow all worked out and everything fell into place, though I pretty much assumed it never would.

Overall, this place is perfect for me. It won’t stretch my budget to an ungodly amount and I will still be able to have everyone there that I want to be there. (Except Bear sad face) I get to incorporate all the ideas I have into this space, and best of all, it will all turn out perfectly! I never really knew that this is what I was envisioning this whole time, but it totally is!

Anyone else have really good suggestions for those in venue turmoil??? It’s such a hard process.

Hey, check out the journey I have taken to finding a venue from the original Aptos dilemma, to the back yard wedding pros and cons, including the actual backyard I would have it in! Also, there was the time I was going to pay a ridiculous amount in site fees. Down to the time where I just sent a plea for help on the blog! And finally, pictures of the actual wedding venue!

How am I planning on decorating this amazing venue?? Check out a few of my favorite things I plan to incorporate, S’more favors, my actual wedding favors pies,  and some really cool centerpieces that I love!

{Inspiration} Home Decor

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I spent the last week moving. It has taken me away from the computer a bit more, but no need to worry, I am making great headway on the wedding planning for sure! More about that soon!

As I have said before, I absolutely love taking home decor and transferring it into wedding decor (then straight back to home decor for dual uses!).

I wanted to show off a little of the home inspiration and I am grabbing from because I am of course only getting items that can be dual used for my wedding as well. This has given me a whole new burst of wedding inspiration cause it is new and different and the ideas are most definitely unconventional. Which, if you know me, us exactly what I love!

These colors and textures are definitely what I am looking for in terms of wedding decor and the feel I want. I take home decor photos and look for those little details such as shelves, books, lamps, coffee table decor, etc. and those are the things I definitely plan to dual use! I love that I have similar style for both the home and the wedding, talk about green and reusable! Are you incorporating any items into your wedding that you plan to use afterward for your home?

Venue: CHECK?

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I went to see the Vignette Vintage Ranch this weekend! It was definitely the majority pick from all of you on Friday. I was thinking that it would be very hard to incorporate my vision and style into this space, but after talking with a few of my bridesmaids, I realized that everything I have been talking about from the keys and the pie favors, to fire-pits and the burlap inspiration are all things that would be perfect in this venue! I guess I never really knew what my inspiration and vision really was!

So, now to take you through the venue :) I will warn you in advance though, there is definitely some good news and some bad news. (PS-these are iPhone pics, so they are not all that good.)

This tree is in the middle right when you walk in. I know that Ian would love to have horseshoes at the wedding as we just got them in our backyard and they are all obsessed! We could use this tree for a bunch of signs pointing all different directions, which would be super cute!

This is the ceremony spot. The backdrop is great, rolling mountains as far as you can see. The spot in front is all grass, which I don’t hate and isn’t a deal-breaker, but I don’t love all that much. I think I could make this alter pretty cute, but it’s definitely my least favorite part of the spot.

This is just a picture to give an idea of the amount of space, greenery, picture spots, etc. The ceremony spot is on the left.

You can kind of see the ceremony spot to the right, and this is the bar area. They have really vintage coke freezers, which we could definitely incorporate! Kind of a cute little area over there.

This is the ranch area! Super rustic, but I will tell you that it looks sooo much better in person! This would be the cocktail area. There is an indoor bar, an old vintage furnace, and benches lining the walls! Super cute little area.

Standing on the ranch veranda, you look out on the barn. I love the barn! I was thinking that we could use the space between the ranch and the barn for the fire-pits, s’mores, cigars, etc. At night we can open the barn doors (on the left) and dancing could take place inside while the fire-pits are going outside.  That way everyone is together even if not everyone wants to do the same thing!

This is the inside of the barn. It is just super simple and could offer SO many really amazing decor plans. Literally an empty slate!

So there you have it! The place was quiet and serene and overall amazing! I could see every aspect of the wedding fitting in perfectly here, and I could really picture it all. I could picture the people, the set-up, the decor, everything!

Now for the downside of it all. I was so excited and ready to book. The venue coordinator called me and I told her I was ready to pick a date and send her the deposit immediately. Can you believe it??? I had decided on a venue! I was beyond excited. So what changed? I asked her about fire-pits, and guess what, that’s a no. They don’t allow fire because of the mountains and greenery. She did say that she would check since she heard how upset I was about that one aspect. So, there is still the possibility especially if I do it in April as there is more rain so the dryness isn’t an issue. So, hopefully I’ll find out soon!

Otherwise, I have to make the decision if I need the fire-pits that much to find a whole new venue, or if I should just figure out something that would be just as awesome. Any suggestions??

PS: I love that someone agrees with me on the name Brooklyn…and I totally agree about the backyard thing. Thanks for the letter :) I really do totally feel like I totally understand. <3

{Help} Narrowing Down the Venues!

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I am about to get amazingly personal with all of you, so I sure hope you’re ready for it! I have been so venue-challenged, and I feel like it is only getting worse. It has been almost 8 months and I swear, if I don’t find one soon, I’m giving up! So, I am going to lay it all out here for all of you with the hope that some feedback is just what I need to pick the right place!
I started this wedding planning process with the idea that I could do the wedding for $10,000. Now, that may be a very popular number these days for those budget brides, but I never thought that $10,000 would mean giving up my Vera Wang, my fire pit and lounge areas, or all the other million things I wanted. And let me say this in my defense, I never would have had to. I’m smart, resourceful and very DIY handy. I know it could have been done. So, why am I not doing that? Well, because I woke up to the amount of work it would take and the amount of hours I work in a week (well over 100) and I just realized that I would burn myself to the bone. I don’t have the time like I used to.

So, fine. I got over that and I upped the budget. I let the parents and everyone help out and we came to yet another agreement, which sounded fair enough. The only problem is that I can’t get the REASON behind the $10,000 budget out of my head. That’s a lot of money. Really, it is! So, where do I draw the line? That’s the problem I keep struggling with.

Ok, now onto the venues, I have three solid options at this point. Read my pros and cons and let me know what you think!

  1. Ventana Inn

I absolutely love this place (remember when I talked about it before), but it is definitely the most expensive! I would get one terrace for both ceremony and reception. The terrace holds 80 people total. This means I am cutting my guest list by 50! (We both have big families). So let’s say I can cut the guest list, those 80 chosen ones are still going to cost $75 per plate for dinner. This is not a bad number, but adding the drinks on is a whole new story! For 2 hours of open bar, it costs $35. 2 hours! OMG, that’s insane. So unless I want to be tacky and make an announcement that everyone needs to literally stock up, I have to pay $10 per hour per person after those two hours. And what about during dinner, during speeches. My 2 hours includes people not being able to stand because of speeches! Lame.Roughly, I will probably end up spending $150 per head for everything including 30% of random dumb extra charges. So, all in all, this wedding scenario will cost me $14,200 for 80 guests. 20 of which are in the bridal party!

Not to mention all of that, the rooms at this place are about $500 per night! I just can’t make my guests do that. So, I would have to research a cute Inn near by.

This one is definitely the splurge and probably my favorite option, if I had the money for it and was comfortable spending that!

  1. Vignette Vintage Ranch

This spot is great, but it’s not 100% my style. I am definitely more a fan of the refined, classy, chic look. It’s a little harder for me to think with rustic, vintage, distressed, and shabby looks. Every wedding I see makes me crave a ranch wedding though, which is why this place is in the running. Only Beer and Wine (but it is BYO meaning I will save literally thousands of dollars!) caterer is $86 per person. It is all inclusive with tables, chairs, linens, taxes, etc. etc. etc. That’s sooooo nice! But, I have a feeling this venue just isn’t the nicest vintage barn. But does that matter?? Chandeliers, lanterns, couches and fire pits should handle that just fine! This one would be about $13,000 for 100 guests including everything. Cheaper and more guests, but definitely not as nice.

  1. My parent’s backyard

You may have heard me bring this up before. Well, its definitely still in my mind! My thought is that I would do WHATEVER I wanted and go a little psychotic on the details and the décor. Heck, I have months to do all the prep work. I would save so much money finding my own caterer and bringing in my own drinks. It would be half the cost roughly. So, I decided the one thing that could make me fall in love with this idea would be to plexi-glass the pool and make it the dance floor!  It would be the splurge of the event, but it would be INCREDIBLE! I would still be spending under $14,000 to do food and everything including the plexi-glass.

The con is definitely that it is not set up for a wedding, so it makes it far more difficult. I would want to find a place for the ceremony that wasn’t the house. I’ll have to research some places around the area. The other problem is that there are no epic photo spots. I want some great photos and the backyard just won’t provide that for me. This is definitely a huge consideration of mine!

Check this for ALL the pictures of my parents backyard!

So there you have it.

I would LOVE to hear thoughts and suggestions, ideas or even other venues you think I must see! I need some help ehre, and I am turning to the people that have been riding this wedding planning wave with me for the past 7 months! I know you guys know what I want, what a great wedding is, and what the best decision is-so go for it!

Thanks !

It’s the Small Things

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

My favorite part to planning is to find the perfect little thing that works for the exact detail I am looking for. Something that will probably be overlooked by the general guest, but something that I will look over, notice is there, and smile a little bit at myself. It’s going to be a great day.

I have decided a few things! Me! Deciding things! Weird huh?? Well, I have finally picked the style I want and the general vision of the wedding. Now if only someone would make a venue that fits my needs because at this point, it doesn’t really exist if you ask me.

I have already talked a bit about the centerpieces and table numbers I love. For some reason this is one of the most important parts to me, and something that I really want to have be exactly right. I have showed you table numbers I like, and centerpieces I like, and I am here to show a few more!

Vera Wang – Spring 2010 {My Faves}

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Today I am in a major Vera Wang mood! I have been looking at her newest collections over and over again. Just when I thought I was safe in picking the dress I want, she has to come out with more to-die-for choices! She really can’t go wrong when it comes to bridal, or really anything else for that matter!

The thing I am definitely looking forward to the least is the dress. Weird huh? I know, but I have a good explanation. Basically this is probably the one thing that I won’t settle on. This is the one aspect that has to be exactly the way I want it to be, no matter the price range. The thought of trying on “off the rack” dresses and then not being satisfied, eeks!

I KNOW I want Vera Wang, and these were the two I have picked. The Dorothy and the Diana. Both are BEYOND incredible works of art, and I would probably be happy with either.

So, I started checking out the “recycled gown” scene a bit to see what I could find. Luckily, there are tons of “Diana” dresses around, so that’s good. But the less known, more artistic and definitely more “statement” of the two dresses, the Dorothy (top left) is no where to be found at all. I am going to keep the search going since I have a bit of time though!

Later to come, the collections since her Spring 2010, more to-die-for eye candy coming on the dress front!

Ventana Inn, Possible Venue Spot???

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

As you can probably imagine, I am driving myself crazy with this venue search! Holy Moly this is just getting ridiculous! So, I have decided to just go flat out and look for a place until I find one.

I am having 2 major problems when finding a venue: First is that I can’t find a place with my true style with what I really want. Some are close, but have some great big draw backs that just won’t work. My second problem is just that I am not willing to completely overpay for a place. I just can’t do it and feel good about myself, which makes finding a reasonable venue that much harder.

I found this place again today and remembered how much I like it. I looked at the numbers and so far, they don’t seem that bad actually. I know that the place will probably not be as great as it seems at first glance, but as of now, I’m in love with this place, so I’ll consider it for a moment longer!

Ventana Inn in Big Sur, CA

The view from the reception Terrace.

The Gorgeous Fire Pit area! Seeing as firepits and s’more making is one of my favorite ideas ever, I am really happy to see that they have a space for that!

Here is the option of having a reception at the firepit spot, or I could just do the cocktail hour there, then come back for dancing!
