Advice, Tips and Planning

Make-Up and Your Big Day!

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Today I thought it would be great to get some tips from a professional make-up artist to help you with the look for your big day. Tamra Marie works in the Bay Area, CA doing bridal make-up professionally. I have asked her to contribute a few tips to help all the brides out, and believe me, I have my paper and pencil out and taking notes!

Every bride wants to look her best on her wedding day but don’t stray to far from your usual look.  I’ve had minimalist makeup wearers request a red lip vintage look for their trials and had brides who normally wore heavy eyeliner ask for a natural look, but neither usually feel’s themselves when it’s done. I’m all for playing around with makeup, but your wedding day isn’t the day to do it. If you want to try a smokey eye for the first time, save it for your bachelorette party!

There are a few tips that you should really take into account on your big day to make sure you are camera-ready.

Pre-Wedding Beauty Basics:

·       Facials should be scheduled one week prior

·       Avoid using Retin-A products or any other strong skin treatments

·       Avoid salt, carbonated drinks, and alcohol. They can cause puffiness throughout your face and body.

·       Plan to get your eyebrows and body waxed at least 3 days before; Redness can be tough to cover, and some people stay slightly swollen for a couple days post-wax.

·       Drink eight to ten glasses of water for at least five days before

·       Get a massage a day or two before the big day

·       Have a long, leisurely bath the evening before, and get a good night’s sleep

{Help} Narrowing Down the Venues!

Friday, July 16th, 2010

I am about to get amazingly personal with all of you, so I sure hope you’re ready for it! I have been so venue-challenged, and I feel like it is only getting worse. It has been almost 8 months and I swear, if I don’t find one soon, I’m giving up! So, I am going to lay it all out here for all of you with the hope that some feedback is just what I need to pick the right place!
I started this wedding planning process with the idea that I could do the wedding for $10,000. Now, that may be a very popular number these days for those budget brides, but I never thought that $10,000 would mean giving up my Vera Wang, my fire pit and lounge areas, or all the other million things I wanted. And let me say this in my defense, I never would have had to. I’m smart, resourceful and very DIY handy. I know it could have been done. So, why am I not doing that? Well, because I woke up to the amount of work it would take and the amount of hours I work in a week (well over 100) and I just realized that I would burn myself to the bone. I don’t have the time like I used to.

So, fine. I got over that and I upped the budget. I let the parents and everyone help out and we came to yet another agreement, which sounded fair enough. The only problem is that I can’t get the REASON behind the $10,000 budget out of my head. That’s a lot of money. Really, it is! So, where do I draw the line? That’s the problem I keep struggling with.

Ok, now onto the venues, I have three solid options at this point. Read my pros and cons and let me know what you think!

  1. Ventana Inn

I absolutely love this place (remember when I talked about it before), but it is definitely the most expensive! I would get one terrace for both ceremony and reception. The terrace holds 80 people total. This means I am cutting my guest list by 50! (We both have big families). So let’s say I can cut the guest list, those 80 chosen ones are still going to cost $75 per plate for dinner. This is not a bad number, but adding the drinks on is a whole new story! For 2 hours of open bar, it costs $35. 2 hours! OMG, that’s insane. So unless I want to be tacky and make an announcement that everyone needs to literally stock up, I have to pay $10 per hour per person after those two hours. And what about during dinner, during speeches. My 2 hours includes people not being able to stand because of speeches! Lame.Roughly, I will probably end up spending $150 per head for everything including 30% of random dumb extra charges. So, all in all, this wedding scenario will cost me $14,200 for 80 guests. 20 of which are in the bridal party!

Not to mention all of that, the rooms at this place are about $500 per night! I just can’t make my guests do that. So, I would have to research a cute Inn near by.

This one is definitely the splurge and probably my favorite option, if I had the money for it and was comfortable spending that!

  1. Vignette Vintage Ranch

This spot is great, but it’s not 100% my style. I am definitely more a fan of the refined, classy, chic look. It’s a little harder for me to think with rustic, vintage, distressed, and shabby looks. Every wedding I see makes me crave a ranch wedding though, which is why this place is in the running. Only Beer and Wine (but it is BYO meaning I will save literally thousands of dollars!) caterer is $86 per person. It is all inclusive with tables, chairs, linens, taxes, etc. etc. etc. That’s sooooo nice! But, I have a feeling this venue just isn’t the nicest vintage barn. But does that matter?? Chandeliers, lanterns, couches and fire pits should handle that just fine! This one would be about $13,000 for 100 guests including everything. Cheaper and more guests, but definitely not as nice.

  1. My parent’s backyard

You may have heard me bring this up before. Well, its definitely still in my mind! My thought is that I would do WHATEVER I wanted and go a little psychotic on the details and the décor. Heck, I have months to do all the prep work. I would save so much money finding my own caterer and bringing in my own drinks. It would be half the cost roughly. So, I decided the one thing that could make me fall in love with this idea would be to plexi-glass the pool and make it the dance floor!  It would be the splurge of the event, but it would be INCREDIBLE! I would still be spending under $14,000 to do food and everything including the plexi-glass.

The con is definitely that it is not set up for a wedding, so it makes it far more difficult. I would want to find a place for the ceremony that wasn’t the house. I’ll have to research some places around the area. The other problem is that there are no epic photo spots. I want some great photos and the backyard just won’t provide that for me. This is definitely a huge consideration of mine!

Check this for ALL the pictures of my parents backyard!

So there you have it.

I would LOVE to hear thoughts and suggestions, ideas or even other venues you think I must see! I need some help ehre, and I am turning to the people that have been riding this wedding planning wave with me for the past 7 months! I know you guys know what I want, what a great wedding is, and what the best decision is-so go for it!

Thanks !

Backyard Wedding Cuisine

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The heat has me all obsessed with backyard weddings, spring and summer themes, and some really creative foods! Mix it all into one and I have created a full menu for your backyard wedding affair. Quite honestly, this would be perfect for a bridal shower or engagement party as well. Keeping with the causal theme of the backyard affair, this menu is simple, easy, and pretty darn colorful.

My favorite way to display fruit has to be on a stick in the form of a kabob, or in those cute little balls. I love the creativity of these fruit displays so so much. I definitely wish I had thought about this before my own engagement party!

Always a hit, mason jars and spouted jars with colorful and fun drink choices! LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Depending on the formality of your wedding, these are the perfect solution to a dinner. I love kabobs and all the choices you have with ingredients, but on top of that, the clean up is virtually none. If you are planning on making your own food for your wedding, and I know some of you really are, then this is a great idea for dinner. So simple, and so yummy!

Yummy Yummy ice cream. Now, on an extremely hot summer day, ice cream is the perfect solution. You may not be willing to let the tradition of the wedding cake go, I certainly am not, but as an alternative, or along with the cake, ice cream can be a really fun way to cool down the guests and offer a little something else.

I’m still completely indecisive about the venue and the type of wedding I really want to do, so I am just looking over my options a bit to see how I really would do things and how I could create a really fun and amazing wedding with certain types of venues! I’ll probably have more to come as I sort through all the different styles of venues until I can pick the one that I love the most for my wedding!

Who knew venue hunting would be this hard in Northern CA???

The First Look

Monday, June 21st, 2010

The first look was one of my favorite parts of Ryan and Liz’s wedding. Of course none of the bridesmaids were at the scene, but instead, we were all crammed together on the end of the balcony trying to get as close of a look as possible. Even from that distance the moment was amazing, you really could just feel it. The body language really spoke for itself.

I love this little sequence below because it takes no words to describe. The love and excitement is so present between the two of them that it is rather hard to try to put words to this incredibly romantic moment.

The First Look:

How do you feel about first looks? Are you going to do one??

I wasn’t really that into them before, but after seeing this and thinking about it more, I really do think I am going to do one. The reasons I have been able to muster up would be first and foremost, the photography opportunity! It is really hard to get these kinds of shots while walking down the aisle, and could you imagine if they didn’t have these gorgeous shots? Oh and a side note would be that you could get some of the photography shot list done before the wedding. Second reason would be the intimate moment of the whole thing. I would like the moment between him and I to be special, intimate and alone. Plus you can say a few words to each other possibly lighten the jitters a bit?? Plus I think the walking down the isle moment is in such a different element, that he will look just as he would’ve if he didn’t see you in the first place. The last reason for me personally is that my eye sight is really bad, so chances are, I won’t even be able to see him half the time I am walking down the isle!

So what are your pro’s and con’s on the first look? Are you adding it to your wedding, or are you sticking to tradition??

From Wedding to Home – Wine Crates

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

I mentioned earlier this week about how I was going to reuse my wedding decor for a home makeover after the wedding! Well, here is a tip for you to do so.

Wine Crates work perfect especially for vineyard weddings. The uses are endless as you can decorate your space by  add your favors or place cards in them or standing your cake on one for an extra touch. Depending on your budget, you could use one for each centerpiece by placing your centerpiece items inside the box. Either way, there really are quite a lot of options wedding-wise!

After the wedding, these are one of the most multi-purpose items you could have. Use them to store items on high shelves which will hold a bunch of clutter, but all that will be seen is the exterior of this beautiful and rustic crate. Also use them to create shelving or as planter boxes.

For a price tag of about $20,you have yourself a beautiful and rare addition to your wedding, then you have something which can be used constantly in your home! Enjoy!

Found this store online, but you can also check out local vineyards or supply stores!

From Wedding to Home Makeover – How to Reuse!

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

I absolutely love home decor, and plan on creating a beautiful nest as soon as possible. As you may know, I am paying for a chunk of my wedding, and choosing to keep the budget at a very low amount. My goal: $10,000. Since I am paying for a chunk, I thought my home makeover would have to wait.

When I got to thinking about it, $10,000 is not a lot for a wedding, but it is definitely a chunk of money which I could think of tons of other ways to spend. I had a problem with the fact that the only tanglible things I will end up with after the wedding come in high quantities and will probably end up in my closet or for sale on the Internet. I feel like it is wasteful to spend so much and come out with nothing you can reuse in the end. (I am talking merely about decor logistics and not about what this special day will mean for the both of us)

So, here is what I pledge to do for my wedding:

I will work very hard to create a wedding with all reusable decor. Everything I purchase will have a duel purpose; wedding then into my home!

This plan will allow me to spend my $10,000 budget even better and stretch that amount to it’s absolute value. This is a very green approach to planning my wedding as the wastefulness will practically not exist.

In the end I will have a very personalized and unique wedding that is very special to the both of us, then I will have a house makeover! My home will be filled with items from the wedding which will make the space we share together that much more special.

Want to join me??? Each week I will post more and more tips on how to go about doing this. Even if you don’t do it 100% don’t you think it would be nice to get a few great home decor items from your wedding? Most tips are incredibly easy!

Would love to hear your thoughts- are you already doing this? Do you want to do this for your wedding? Or do you think it is just too much to worry about?

I Can’t Thank You Enough!

Thanks for visiting Engaged and Inspired!

Photo By: Cooper Falk “Models”: Liz, Melissa and Allison (me!)

Hello! I want to greatly thank you, my readers, for your unconditional support of me! After reviewing the stats, the traffic has been up and up every single month since the launch. I only care about this because I can see that you guys are really responding to my writing, and that means so much to me! I am getting to know the brides to be and the amazing vendors, and I thank you for allowing me to be in your lives and inspire you!

When I started Engaged and Inspired, I had high hopes and major dreams of where it would lead. But hopes and dreams are one thing, and making those actually happen is a whole other! I was nervous because after having a fashion blog, I definitely know that blogging is not all it’s cracked up to be. There are writer’s blocks and uninspiring moments, so I was pretty nervous when I would drop this and move on!

This blog is just short of 4 months old, and if anything, I am getting stronger and stronger! My fiance and my friends have been an incredible support to me, these are all people I could never live without. They are amazing. Besides that, it is you guys, my readers, that keep me going day by day! Knowing that someone is listening makes me want to post the absolute best content I can. You make me want to move this blog to new levels and you inspire me.

I want to thank you all so much. There is no special date or reason to do so, I just want to thank you for reading, for interacting and for caring! I am so excited about the new features Engaged and Inspired will have soon. There is so much in store to help brides-to-be and vendors. Engaged and Inspired will revolutionize the wedding industry by adding simplicity and giving the brides and the vendors the resources they need. (Much more to come on that later!)

As far as my WONDERFUL sponsors, I thank you so very much for believing in me as a “new blog” and taking the leap with me! Without your support I can take this blog to the next levels and bring you all with me! I wouldn’t be able to do all of this without you, so I greatly thank you :)

When I started Engaged and Inspired we were all engaged to be married. Now we are all planning our weddings, and we are all in eachother’s weddings! The first is in May, the second is in September, and the third is next March. I don’t know what we used to talk about as more recently it is wedding central! The three of us constantly inspire each other in so many ways, which is the feel that I want my blog to have as well; friends constantly inspiring each other :)

I look forward to many more months and years of friends inspiring friends!

Wish Upon a Wedding

Friday, April 30th, 2010

I assume most of you have heard of Wish Upon a Wedding by now. To do my part in helping to raise awareness, I wrote an article about Wish Upon a Wedding for a fashion and lifestyle magazine I am a part of. Most of them are not heavily, if at all, involved in the wedding industry, so I wanted to do my part in spreading the word to a community that would otherwise not be aware.

In doing this research, I was highly impressed by their past weddings. It is so fantastic to see a group of vendors (and of course a bunch of other people) donated their services to this event. I think the wedding turned out amazing, and the couple looks incredibly happy. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for such deserving couples thanks to Wish Upon a Wedding. Oh, and I love her cake!

“The Wish Upon a Wedding foundation is the first non-profit wedding wish granting organization out there. The purpose behind the organization is to help give people facing life-threatening illnesses the wedding celebration they deserve. By doing so, couples are able to give other couples a chance to take their minds off all the things going on in their day-to-day life and celebrate their love by giving them something they never thought possible – their dream wedding.”
