The Wedding Favor Debate

March 9, 2012

Finding the perfect wedding favor not is not only tricky, but these days, it seems, the tradition is almost unnecessary. It is not uncommon for the bride and groom to forgo giving their guests wedding favors completely. While I completely understand why, I knew that for our wedding I want to give our guests a little token of our gratitude.

Coming up with the perfect wedding favor is tricky! Something edible is always a good choice. At least you can safely assume it won’t go to waste.

How cute are these favors?

There are lots of fun things you can do with jam. I just adore these setups.

Ultimately, I would like to do something meaningful, inexpensive, and that our guests would appreciate. Any ideas??

*What did you/are you going to give as favors at your wedding? Or are you against giving favors altogether? *What was the best wedding favor you ever received?

Originally we were going to boxed Mararons… but in the end it was just too expensive for 75 people. Instead, we offered the Macarons (60 vs. 225 if boxed) on our dessert table. They looked lovely and those who wanted one got it, ate it and enjoyed it. Also no packaging to throw away later. Our wedding was full of little details but this was one I was ok with letting go. :]

I love those mini-pies and the tea cup candles!! Absolutely ADORABLE! We did mason jars filled with hershey kisses…and I wrapped labels that I designed around the jar and covered the lid with fabric and ribbon! The jars worked out to be like $1/jar from Overstock, and I think the total was about $3/favor if you add in the fabric, ribbon and chocolate. Very cheap and totally adorable!

We are having a photobooth and guests will get to take home copies of their pics (as many as they want). Additionally, we’re also having an edible favor :)

    Picture number 1 is adorable!!

We included a spice mix and a recipe for a spice cake that we made together on one of our first dates. We figured even if people didn’t bake the cake, the spices would make their pantry smell good! (We also gave away some little things from India since our wedding was multicultural)

We made mix cds of our favorite Frank Sinatra songs (his music was part of our theme, including our “guest book” & our first dance song!) We also did M&Ms in our wedding colors, white, black & lavendar, with just the signature M considering our last name, Martin.

I can’t remember a wedding favor I loved, mostly because I feel like they are a waste of money. In theory, they are super cute and love the photos of them, but I just don’t think they are worth the time and effort. It’s hard because I keep debating this, but I know when I am a guest I don’t want to carry a jar of jam back to my hotel and I definitely don’t want to pack one in my suitcase. I think items guests can eat during the wedding weekend are much better, but that’s just me.

I totally agree with Emily. I went to a friends wedding recently and the majority of her favors were not taken by the guests. It wasn’t that the favors weren’t good (she made cookies) it was just not something the guests focused on. I would spend more time coming up with a cocktail that guests can choose from that represent the bride and groom for cocktail hour. To me, it seems more memorable :-)
