The Ring::Modern, Classic, Nontraditional…

Taylor Chatfield January 30th, 2012 by Taylor Chatfield

Of all the decisions I’ve made for the wedding, by far the most difficult and the one that I am ALL OVER the board on is the ring. Everyday I show JB ring upon ring from wide to thin, diamond-filled to etched, I simply don’t have the power to make up my mind on this one.

I want to be able to wear my band by itself, or with my engagement ring and at the moment (this literal moment, as I’m writing this) I’m leaning toward minimal or no diamonds (who needs ‘em…have you seen my engagement ring?! JB rocked it).

My main problem is that the rings I want aren’t sold in store (etsy-love), or they’re not sold near me (NYC has the main stock of rings I want), so I can’t try them on with my engagement ring. That’s why I need your help, what do you think?

Here are some of my options in all their glory…I’ve tried to narrow it down to my faves, but honestly there are probably more that I may like better, or at least like better for a few minutes (my indecisiveness is RAMPANT). Because there is such a long list of possibilities coming your way, I’ve broken them down in to groups so that you can easily source each image. Plus, ALL of these can be ordered online and they’re all well under $1,000.

P.S. Which ever ring I decide on, I will order in white gold (so no worries on the yellow v. white gold issue).

I was going to try to list my favorites from each group…but I can’t even decide on that.

Clockwise from top left: one, two, three, four, five

These next ones match my engagement ring, they’re made by Eidel Precious and would clearly fit well with my current ring, but I think they’re just a little too classic for me. However they are SO gorgeous and sparkly!

The next set I absolutely adore. I love that number 3 is vintage, but I think it might be a bit too wide. I really love the placement of the stones on numbers two and four. I just generally like number one.

Clockwise from top left: one, two, three, four

Number three of the next four is from BHLDN and I LOVE it, but I don’t know if I love it as a wedding ring or just as a ring.

Clockwise from top left: one, two, three, four

This final grouping is maybe my favorite…maybe.

Clockwise from top left: one, two, three

What do you think? Which is your favorite? Which would look best with my ring?

My first thought was any of those more braided style rings…they’re like a perfect mix to me of classic and non-traditional! The first one that looks like a branch? I love it for you, but I’m not sure it’d fit your ring, but it breaks my heart because that ring is so naturally beautiful. I’m gonna say my faves are the middle 3 in the first group (I know, decisive!) and the 1st one in the the last group!

    Gosh, this is tough, though!

I love the top right white gold ring (under the top horizontal choice) if it looked good with your ring. It is so beautiful!

Hmmm I really love the first one that looks like a branch/twig but agree with Sarah that it might not fit with your ring. Maybe it can be a “right-hand” ring? :)

I have the same style of ring! I ended going with the traditional set (thin band of diamonds, all the way around so it always looked propah) because I never wanted to separate them. But since you’re looking for the flexibility of separate OR together.. I’ll just say, I think having a diamond (or more) would unite the rings on some level, even if the styles differ. I absolutely ADORE (seriously) the first ring, but.. I’d worry the uneven’ness would fight with your current ring. Definitely a right-hander though! :) The braided and rope choices are super cute too, but.. The second link (of the first set) seems like the best of all your worlds. It’s even very reminiscent of the last two (in your fav pile), and is up to the “level” of your ring. :) It could stand alone and fit with your ring, so as fun as the others are, it has my vote :D

But if your heart just dropped and you wished my vote went toward another.. you might also have your answer, too :D

I’m lucky enough not to have the same problem as you regarding the engagement vs wedding ring situation as I’m the one who proposed so no engagement ring for me which I’m super totally fine with! not much of a bling and jewellery girl. That being said I did want a beautiful one of a kind wedding ring and I found this website, http://www.rustjewellery.com/ and that was it! Their diamonds are blood and conflict free and all their rings are handmade in their London (or Tokyo) workshops. They have different styles that you can even customise to some extent (add diamonds or engravings mostly) and you can choose what metal you want your ring to be made in.
Living in the UK, my boyfriend and I went to the workshop, there are no pushy sales people there, Tao (the owner of the shop) received us and helped us out, gave us advice when we needed him to but mostly left us alone to try our rings, talk it out, etc.
I know going to the UK isn’t an option for you (or maybe it is, what do I know?! :D ), but Artemis (Tao’s wife) is as friendly in emails as Tao is in real life and the rings are absolutely amazing. So do have a peak at their website, it’s truly beautiful.

Christine! After I wrote this post, I found Rust and that is where I ultimately ordered my ring from! That is so crazy, what a small world! Thank you so much for the advice.
