Sugar High
January 21, 2012
I am halfway through a 30 day sugar detox. Yes, this was self-imposed and yes I am crazy. After a splurging on way too many holiday treats, I decided to take a break from the sweet stuff for a month in the hopes of get my cravings back in check. Consequently, all I can think about is sugar as of late! So I thought I would channel this into something productive and start salivating searching for some awesome cake décor ideas!
My fiancé is still unsure about having a full-blown cake. He would like a dessert bar with lots of options for people to choose from. Given that this is one of the only things he has expressed an opinion about (the other thing was hors d’oeuvre – are you sensing a theme?), I think I have to give it to him. But I still would like a cake – likely a small one – in order to capture the obligatory cake-cutting moment. And I also love the tradition of freezing the top layer and enjoying it together on your first anniversary (“enjoy” might not be the right word – does it still taste good after a year?).
So far I am leaning toward all white! I absolutely love these eyelet ones I have come across.

And these flower cakes are breathtaking!

Since one of our colors is gold, I would also be open to incorporating that into the cakes, especially if they look like these!
Finally, I might enhance the Art Deco theme a bit more by highlighting it in our cake.
Which one do you like the best? Please let me know in your comments below!
P.S. I know I didn’t say a single word about flavor and that is because I don’t discriminate when it comes to cake – I like it all! And this is exactly the reason why I need a sugar detox!

Good luck with your sugar detox! I can’t imagine giving up sweets. These cakes are all gorgeous. Its one thing I feel like I am missing out on because our cake comes included with our reception package. Don’t get me wrong, its nice to have one less thing to pay for but I would love to be able to design the cake…at least we get to choose the flavor : )
All the cakes are amazing!! But I have to say the ones with the gold accents are even more amazing!! Im a pastry chef/cake designer, so please do me a favor and DONT save your top layer in the freezer!!! A full year in the freezer and your cake wont be nearly as good as the fresh one! Plus you can serve the top layer at your wedding, which helps with servings sizes.. When you do decide on a cake, your baker should offer to bake you a fresh and new top layer for your first anniversary!!! :) :)
@Keri – I would LOVE one less thing to worry about. You are lucky!
@ Nicole – good to know! I will certainly ask for the fresh cake – year old cake does sound kind of gross :)
I like the art deco ones a lot. My husband really wanted cupcakes while I wanted a traditional tiered cake. We compromised with cupcakes and a cutting cake tier. For our first anniversary, we ordered a 10 inch version of the top of our wedding cake.
I like the gold ones! I think those capture all your themes in one (sort of art deco, sort of vintage, romantic, etc). Plus, I think it’d be easier to hide peanut butter cake or frosting inside a gold cake.
I like all of them, especially the gold leaf…
I LOVE the idea of getting the baker to make you a fresh cake resembling your wedding cake on your first anniversary!!!! Wish I thought of that!
Staring at all these cakes makes me hungry and crave massive amounts of sugar ;-)
I love all the cakes! What about the lace ones with gold behind the lace to make it really stand out! I am so surprised you may be leaning towards getting a cake! I think you should at least get a small one so you can cut it and then shove it in Niall’s face after! haha! Jk!
