Talking Catering Over at Tweet My Wedding

May 28th, 2010 by Allison

As you may know, I write for the Tweet My Wedding Bridal Blog each Friday. I love that I have this opportunity to connect up with so many brides and talk about everything wedding! The more opportunities to talk about weddings the better, right?

This week I am talking about the absurd quote that I received from a caterer! The ridiculous portion is the amount they charge for staff, gratuity and taxes. I’ll give you a hint, it’s more than the cost of the food!

I would love to hear thoughts about the option I have to make the food ourselves. We are chalk full of pretty amazing cooks, so it would taste absolutely amazing, but is that one more thing I want to take on??

Read the whole post for more, then let me know your thoughts!

I would say shop around a little bit more. . .doing the food yourselves just seems SO stressful! Maybe you could just do heavy appetizers, drinks & dessert? Or ask if you could have fewer waitstaff?

My advice if you want to go the ‘make it yourself option’ would be to do food stations. This way you could always cater a few smaller stations, and also designate different ‘cooks’ to different stations! You could do a simple and fun ‘favourite foods station’ (I’m doing this for mine!) with fun foods like mini hamburgers, french fries in cute containers …simple and fairly easy to take on yourself. A dessert/sweet bar would be great, and an easy way to have many people contribute!

The price of the catering ‘extras’ can be astronomical, especially when they take on everything …but if you break it up, you may be able to find some loop holes:)

    Good luck!

this is amazing advice !! Yes, we can have different types of foods in different areas. I know it will all be incredibly delicious because of the people who are making it! I think with this much time to plan, find recipes, and finalize a perfect menu, we may have time to make it all come off without a hitch!
